I've had a connect page here for a while now... and I've decided it's about time I actually DO something to it! So here is my FIRST blog on connect. We'll see how many more come along.
Well... last night, Ben Folds came to Luther College. It was an amazing show. Apparently the last time he came to Luther (about 4 years ago) he broke a Luther piano. They wrote in his contract that he was not allowed to stand on a piano at this concert (and he had to bring his own). I thought that was interesting... and a little funny.
I actually helped the set crew set up the stage for Ben Folds. Not the whole thing, but I helped as much as I could (the concert was a Monday night and I had class... although I really wished I could have skipped going to class). It was such an interesting experience for me. I've never seen a set put together for a show before so to be able to help the guys out and put together speakers and hoist them up 30 feet in the air, then help hang lights... wow. I learned so much from Nate, who was the only guy who bothered to talk to anyone really, and it was fun hearing how he got into his career. He also had a Luther connection!!! That was exciting. Am I allowed to add a "fun facts" part to my resume???
On another note: I'm waiting for the weekend to come. I usually always am but I barely had a weekend this past weekend. Friday night I went to Vagina Monologues with Alex. For those of you who don't know what it is I'll give you a quick summary: a woman went around and interviewed about 45 different women about their vaginas. I know, it sounds odd, but it is different. There were questions like "if you could dress your vagina, what would it wear?" "If your vagina could talk, what would it say?" questions like that. And the stories that were told were so vastly different! There were really funny stories, such as the one entitle "My Angry Vagina" which basically told women to OWN their vaginas. There were also sad stories, and all of them were very powerful. It was a good time.
After the Vagina Monologues Alex and I went to celebrate a friend of ours' 21st birthday. Her name is Beth and she went on my j-term trip to Britain and Ireland. She and I got along really well on the trip, she's a wonderful girl. We met up with her and some of her friends at Roscoe's (the bar here in Decorah) and danced the night away. It was a REALLY good time!
Saturday I did a lot of homework all day but Beth had invited me to an Alpha Beta Psi (ABY) tea party. I'm not really into sororities but after spending a MONTH with Beth who is a member talk about ABY I decided to check it out... and I really think I'm going to pledge. I had such a good time with those girls. They were so sweet and so inviting... I have never felt so included with a group of strangers! We ended up going to Roscoe's again that night. Alex wasn't too pleased when I called him asking if he'd meet with me at the bar AGAIN. Oh well. He came out anyway.
Sunday I spent all day in the library getting things done for Monday and Tuesday because of the Ben Folds concert. It's kind of crazy how much I got done even though I went to the bar TWICE. I never go to the bar. I'm kind of boring.
Like I said, I'm looking forward to this weekend. Hopefully I'll be able to spend some time with Alex just relaxing. I'd really like to watch a movie or something with him but we'll see how much we have going on. I think his family is coming down this weekend. His sister's boyfriend is moving to California on the 12th so we're having a good-bye dinner with him. They live in Rochester (which is about an hour away from here) so it would have been easier for us to go up there, but unfortunately Alex's car decided to DIE and not work so we have no way of returning to Rochester and his family will have to come down here. It'll be good, there are some REALLY nice restuarants down here.
If you've reached this point... hurrah! I don't have a prize for you... but feel good about your reading skills. People do not read enough these days. I'll try harder to make my entries more interesting next time.
Love,
Gaoxue
